21.10.2021 / Rankings

Times Higher Education (THE) world university ranking organization publishes the Universities of Emerging Economies rankings starting from 2014. While 606 universities from 48 countries were evaluated in 2021, 698 universities from 50 countries were evaluated with a 15% increase in the evaluation of 2022. With 97 universities, Chinese universities with the highest participation are in the top five, followed by Russian and Taiwanese universities.

In THE Developing Economies University Rankings, research-intensive universities of developing countries are evaluated on 13 performance criteria under 5 main headings according to their education, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. Universities that do not have undergraduate education, whose research outputs contain less than 1000 articles between 2012 and 2016, or whose activities are not included in the 11 subject areas of THE, are excluded from the ranking. Rates of evaluation criteria are given below:

• Teaching: 30% (recognition survey, academic-student ratio, doctorate-undergraduate ratio, PhD graduate-academic ratio, corporate income)
• Research: 30% (recognition survey, research income, research productivity)
• Citations: 20%
• International outlook: 10% (international-national student ratio, international-national academics ratio, international collaborations)
• Industry revenue: 10%

While 34 universities from our country in 2020 and 43 universities in 2021 were included in the ranking, 54 out of 66 universities were included in the ranking in 2022, and 12 Turkish universities listed as rapporteurs could not be included in the ranking. Hacettepe University, among the universities in Turkey, could not maintain its rise in the previous years among 34 universities in Turkey in 2020 and fell to the 121st place, In 2021, it continued its decline among 43 universities in our country and ranked 134th and in 2022 it regressed to the 201-250 band among 54 universities.
